Piece No. 9: Chronicle

I. Context
Chronicle was founded by Mayuresh Patole to rethink presentations from first principles: not as a slide deck, but as a medium for clear, well-structured storytelling. His intent was to specifically build a product that would help users avoid poor information design, rather than defaulting to slides as the only solution.
II. Choices
A | Framed as documents & chapters rather than presentations & slides
Unlike Powerpoint or Figma Slides, there is no pinned visual in the sidebar as users create. Instead users are anchored to a broader workspace view, with ‘slides’ viewable on hover, leading them to focus less on screens and more on story
Each ‘chapter’ does have base actions like duplicate, copy, add - honoring some of the Powerpoint mental model. These controls are accessible via right-click atop a persistent hover menu
B | Varied entry points to solve ‘cold start’
Given the current market, one might guess that Chronicle would push an AI prompt box as the primary starting point for presentation. Instead, users are offered the options to paste existing text, link a website or generate with AI
This perhaps reflects Chronicle’s origin as a tool to present content in the best way possible - and not one that presumes AI is a requirement to do so
C | Modularity creates implicit foundation
Chronicle offers an inherent structure for its presentations that is formatted but flexible. It leans on the construction of components like card blocks, text blocks, header blocks to accomplish this - a design philosophy fairly similar to Notion’s
This approach means users cannot easily reconstruct their slides (i.e. completely re-prompt & re-format). Instead, users are encouraged to ‘remix’ a slide’s blocks or templated formats to best fit their needs - an intentional choice with tradeoffs
III. Conclusions
Chronicle offers a compelling in-between of free-form surface in Powerpoint or Figma Slides and highly ‘guided’ AI slide generation tools like Gamma. Users can pick and choose elements that best suit the ideas they are trying to convey
That said, I wonder if today’s creators value this flexible middle ground - maybe many are happy to ask AI to create and layout content for them - remaining more focused on the message that comes through, instead of the medium
Nonetheless, Chronicle remains a thoughtfully designed product for those who believe presentations can be an act of craft - where elegance and clarity of thought matter as much as speed and output
